The STAR Sponsorship Program (Success Through Academic Readiness) was founded in 1993 by a group of compassionate business and community leaders with the desire to provide a choice in education for low income and minority children. Academically, such children may lag behind the national average by up to two years. In large cities, up to 50% of low income and minority students may drop out of school before graduating. This lack of education makes the task of improving economic opportunities and redressing social inequities ever harder.

Not everyone had overlooked these children. Many inner city parochial and private schools struggled to meet the needs of local children whose families could not afford to pay already low tuition rates. It was difficult and many schools shut down, never to reopen.

Arising from a desire to remedy these inner-city educational realities, a financial aid program called STAR Sponsorship (patterned after a successful program serving the inner-city community of Manhattan called Student/Sponsor Partnership) was born. The STAR program was designed to assist existing inner-city schools and families seeking educational options for their children.

STAR clearly benefits schools, children, their families, and the community. The dependable payment from STAR students helps schools stay open. The much-needed financial support also enables families to choose a better education for their children. A good education not only builds a good academic foundation, but also builds character and emotional stability. These decent, stable citizens can then help their hurting community.
